On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases held in New York, a BRICS Health Ministers’ Round Table conference was also held on 20 September 2011.  India, a key member of the five- nation BRICS bloc, has asked the grouping to prepare a roadmap for tackling the menace of Non-Communicable Diseases.

Stating that the BRICS forum enjoys a special status since the countries taken together account for approximately 42% of the world population, India's Health Minister Shri Azad urged the BRICS countries to use their considerable expertise and work out short, medium and long term steps as part of the road map to tackle the menace of NCDs and the associated risk factors. Hon’ble HFM offered to facilitate the process by hosting the next BRICS Health Ministers’ conference in India.

Agreeing with the Indian Health Minister, the BRICS Health Ministers conference concluded that detailed technical discussions would be held in the identified areas to work out the road map for collaboration and the countries will closely cooperate to achieve progress in common areas of interest.
